Duke offers a number of special programs in the United States that enable students to study and gain experience in specific academic areas. For full details, visit the Web site for each program. Duke in New York Arts and Media Program The Duke in New York Arts and Media Program is a fall-semester program for juniors and seniors from any major who want to pursue an intensive study of the arts in New York City. The program's components each earn one Duke credit: two seminars taught by the faculty director from Duke; an arts internship; and an elective course at New York University. Leadership and the Arts in New York Sponsored by the Hart Leadership Program, this program offers 18 Duke students (primarily juniors) the chance to spend the spring semester in New York City studying leadership, policy, philanthropy, and creativity as they learn from people who make art and from others who organize and support it. The program includes four full-credit Duke courses, and students regularly attend operas, plays, musicals, concert, and dance performances. Duke in Los Angeles Program in Media Arts and Industries The Duke in Los Angeles Program in Media Arts and Industries gives students interested in the film, television, music recording, contemporary art, and entertainment law industries an intensive spring-semester program in Los Angeles, based at the University of Southern California. Students enroll in four courses, including a seminar taught by the Duke faculty director, an internship, and two other courses at USC. Duke University Marine Laboratory, part of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, is located about three hours from campus near the historic seacoast town of Beaufort, North Carolina. Students and faculty studying at the Marine Lab have direct access to the Atlantic Ocean, Cape Lookout National Seashore Park, sand beaches and dunes, estuaries, wetlands, and maritime forests. The Marine Lab is an interdisciplinary teaching and research facility dedicated to the study of basic coastal processes and human interactions with those processes. |
