Life At Duke: Duke Students: Student Support Services

Student Support Services  |  Student Communities  |  Student Profiles

Being in college is certainly an exercise in independence—you don't have a curfew, you decide when to eat dinner, and no one but you is going to make you finish that essay. At Duke, we respect your individuality and know how essential this experience is to your growth as a successful student and a responsible adult.

However, there will come a time when you need some assistance, and you should know that we're here to assist you. We have an extensive network of Student Support Services, from psychological services to conflict mediation to our Center for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Life. And within each service is an entire team of experienced, thoughtful people. While they won't tell you what to do, they can certainly answer your questions, listen to your concerns, maintain your health, and generally help guide you through this thing called college.

Duke students have always had a hand in creating campus resources. For example, in 1989, a group of undergraduates worked to form what has become the The Women's Center. Now part of the Division of Student Affairs' Department of Campus Life, the Women's Center helps educate the university community about gender-related issues, addressing matters of particular concern to women. The Center works to enhance all students' academic experiences by promoting a campus climate that is safe, healthy, and respectful of all people. In collaboration with student groups and other departments, the Women's Center offers information, advocacy, technical assistance, referrals, and programming on issues such as safety, health, personal and professional development, sexuality, discrimination, and harassment.
