For Parents: Student Resources

Because we realize that the first year of college is a critical one, we make it a point to offer programs and advice that ease the transition to college.

Two student programs offered before orientation forge exceptional bonds among participants. In Project BUILD, around 120 first-year students spend a week doing community work in Durham. Project WILD takes 70 first-year students for 12 days of backpacking, rock-climbing, and rappelling in the North Carolina mountains.

Once your son or daughter is on campus, you can count on a number of people and resources for advice or support.

Duke's Academic Resource Center helps students strengthen their classroom and study skills, while Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) provides a range of services, from educational seminars and support groups to brief individual counseling and psychotherapy. Professionals in the Career Center work with students to explore various career opportunities and provide advice on job search strategies. The Disability Management System—Student Access Office helps qualified students make their experience at Duke University accessible.

The Student Health Center provides medical care and health education, while the Dean of Students Office oversees the residential and judicial systems at Duke. The Women's Center is the locus for advocacy, programming, and information-referral for students on gender issues.

The Multicultural Center works to create a richly diverse and unified campus community through seminars, public forums, and mentorship projects with Duke alumni. The International House is the center of co-curricular programs for Duke students from all over the world.

Emergency Staff On-Call

If an emergency should arise, the Dean of Students Office coordinates university administrative contact for urgent issues and emergencies around the clock. During business hours (from 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday-Friday), anyone in the Dean of Students Office (919-668-3853) can provide assistance. After business hours and during weekends or holidays, a Dean On-Call can be reached through Duke Police (919-684-2444). Also, Duke Police can contact a Residence Coordinator on-call for urgent concerns involving students who live on campus.
