Alumni Interviews

INTERVIEW BASICS

Alumni interviews are an optional part of the Duke application process. While we’d love to interview every applicant, the high volume of applications means we can’t offer interviews to all students. The Admissions Office prioritizes interviews for those applicants where additional context is helpful, but rest assured—not receiving an interview will not affect your chances of admission.

How it Works

All interviews are conducted virtually or by phone by Duke alumni who volunteer their time. They are not employed by the Admissions Office and do not have access to your application, academic records, or other admissions-related information. Importantly, alumni interviewers cannot predict or influence your chances of admission.

We strive to assign alumni interviewers based on your location, but there may be instances where assignments are made differently. Our goal is to ensure that your interview is a productive and comfortable experience.

In the rare case that you’re assigned to an interviewer you know personally, please let us know, and we’ll be happy to reassign you. While we do our best to ensure interviewers do not have prior connections to applicants, we understand that this can occasionally happen. In such cases, interviewers are asked to recuse themselves, and a new interviewer will be assigned.

What to Expect

The virtual or phone interview should feel more like a relaxed conversation, where you can discuss your interests and aspirations, and ask the alumnus/a questions about Duke. It’s a great opportunity to get to know Duke better and provide additional context about yourself beyond the written application.

Timeline

  • Early Decision interviews begin in late October and continue through early November.
  • Regular Decision interviews take place from early December to late February.

HOW TO PREPARE

A little preparation goes a long way. Here are some key tips to keep in mind:

  • Check your email regularly for your interview invite. Also, check your spam/junk folder and voicemail.
  • Respond promptly to schedule your interview or politely decline if necessary.
  • Be on time and, if you need to cancel, let your interviewer know in advance.
  • Prepare questions about Duke that will help guide your conversation. Remember, this is your chance to explore whether Duke is the right fit for you!

DO'S & DONT'S

We want your interview to be a smooth, enjoyable experience. Please keep in mind:

  • No recording or social media posts about the interview, as both applicants and interviewers have been asked to respect privacy.
  • Family and friends should not be present during the interview, as it can distract from a genuine one-on-one conversation.
  • If you have any admissions-related questions, feel free to explore Duke Admissions for more information.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Applicants who do not receive an alumni interview are welcome to record a Glimpse video. Glimpse is an opportunity to share a 60-90 second video helping us to get to know you better. For more information about Glimpse please visit the Glimpse website here. Currently, Glimpse is only available for students attending high school in the United States. For consideration in the Duke Admissions Process, Glimpse videos must be submitted by November 6 for Early Decision and January 16 for Regular Decision.

For international applicants, Duke will also consider interviews from InitialView. Students attending schools in China are particularly encouraged to arrange an interview with InitialView. Applicants interested in an InitialView interview are encouraged to make a reservation here as soon as possible in order to secure a timely appointment.
