Duke in the World

Global Engagements

Duke seeks to establish itself as a global university through which our education, research and outreach are cultivated through networks of embedded and connected relationships and institutions across the globe.

Duke University is committed to providing an undergraduate education with a truly global perspective. We believe that the best possible study abroad experience offers students high caliber academics, a strong support system, and the chance to integrate intellectual inquiry into a mosaic of cultural and personal experiences.

Duke undergraduates study abroad at the highest rate of participation (48%) of any of the top 10 private research universities and Duke has more than 300 partnerships with international institutions. Whatever your future holds, the time you spend abroad will be an undeniable asset.

DukeEngage empowers students to address critical human needs through immersive service, in the process transforming students, advancing the university’s educational mission, and providing meaningful assistance to communities in the U.S. and abroad. The program provides funding for undergraduates who wish to pursue an immersive (minimum of eight weeks) service experience by meeting a community need locally, domestically or internationally. Since the program began, more than 1,400 students have participated in a vast range of civic engagement activities, including environmental advocacy, community outreach, global health, education, social justice and more.

Duke University has formed partnerships and exchange agreements with over 300 international institutions of higher education to broaden the experiences of faculty and students. These partnerships exist on many different levels including research, faculty and student exchanges, and departmental and school agreements.

Built to facilitate communication, encourage collaboration and enable the sharing of resources by faculty, staff and students here at Duke, this interactive map allows visitors to see country specific information on program, unit and school activity; partnerships and agreements; faculty areas of interest; traveler and alumni information as well as highlighting activity in a specific country.

Through one-on-one advising, our global advisors work with students to incorporate global and civic opportunities into your academic plan. The advisors meet one-on-one with any undergraduate student to help them explore their options, reflect on experiences and integrate classes, activities and experiences together.
