Allison Vernerey is well known among Duke sports fans as an active member of the Duke women’s basketball team. A 6'5" center, she played in 105 games, grabbed 423 rebounds and blocked more than 60 shots during her first three years on the team.
What’s less known is that Vernerey has devoted much of her summers and free time not just to perfecting her jump shot, but also to helping others defeat cancer, a disease she has witnessed up close. Through her work with the Duke Cancer Institute, she created Blue Devils vs. Cancer, a student organization that advances cancer awareness among young people, as well as promoting fundraising and volunteerism. She recently raised more than $7,000 at a one-night benefit she organized.
Verenerey, a two-time Capital One Academic All-District III selection, and a three-time All-ACC Academic Team Selection, hails from Alsace, France, and is a current member of the French National I Club team.
