Derek Rhodes, T’15, brings his love of his native city of Durham to his Duke experience. As the Duke Student Government senator for Durham and regional affairs, he was instrumental in re-establishing the Duke-Durham Discount Program, which gives students and faculty discounts at some local restaurants and shops. The program provides incentives for students and staff to explore Durham. Rhodes has been working to expand the program to encourage students to interact with and support the Durham community, notably through its vibrant food culture, which was recognized by Bon Appetit magazine in a story about the “Foodiest Town in America.”
Rhodes's civic mindedness and commitment to Durham did not begin at Duke. He served on the Durham Youth Commission while in high school and, when he was only six years old, led an Adopt-a-Park program that continues to operate today.
Rhodes is also a manager for the Duke Men’s Basketball Team and a member of the Board of Trustees’ Institutional Advancement Committee.
