A native of South Korea, Jean Rheem graduated in 2012 with a psychology major, a visual arts minor and a documentary studies certificate. She developed an independent DukeEngage project in the summer of 2011 in Quito, Ecuador, volunteering with young children in local dental clinics. Her experience inspired her to work toward becoming a pediatric dentist who specializes in working with children with autism.
Rheem was inspired by her experiences at an autism summer camp and has produced two documentary films on autism in hopes of raising awareness. Her second film, The Social Group, is about a group of high-functioning autistic teenagers who have been meeting weekly for the past 10 years. She was also the vice president of Duke’s Autism Speaks U school chapter.
